Not many in boxing or outside of the sport might know that former world champions and twin brothers the Charlo brothers are beefing.
It is seldom you here that ever happening in life.
Let alone two twin brothers as tight as they were from the beginning who trained with one another since kids.
In one of the toughest sports of them all, boxing and then as men, professional boxing.
This is seldom to hear twins falling out but it shows you a little bit as well where the whole PBC, Premier Boxing Champions series and stable, is at.
In many ways it speaks to its decline overall and while in the beginning promised much, Premier Boxing Champions founder Al Haymon made some key mistakes.
The main ones being the following — there are many more though, too much to go into, for now.
He believed in a dying model first — television.
This was short sighted by Haymon and he did not play his cards close to his chest like he thought he did in the early days.
One of the key mistakes in the Haymon downfall and ultimately the PBC, Premier Boxing Champions’ downfall soon, was going all in on linear television early on.
Haymon came from an older generation and did not see boxing like all professional sport now, going online in terms of live boxing and online content consumption.
This is happening in streaming and online media consumption in boxing and all professional sport now.
Haymon did time buys in the early days on US television giving away free boxing to US television companies who were in decline at the time.
As TV revenue shrank, online ad revenue continues to boom, Haymon should have went more in on online in the early days.
Fighters like the Charlo brothers not speaking to one another also shows the lack of depth these day the PBC roster has for boxers.
They do not have the fighters they used to and there are really no new names and contenders coming through for them.
PBC are just cashing out now.
Furthermore, Haymon also went to the UK and tried to get the PBC on UK linear television on ITV.
Similar to his mistakes in the US — too much focus on linear.
Everyone watches sports and gets news online now, mostly, not TV or newspapers anymore.
Hardly anyone, that is.
For balance, the PBC still puts on great fights occasionally, but they are very few and far between now.
It is once in a while that they do. The market is changed now and is more on demand than ever in professional boxing.
Spectators expect great fights everyweek and that is what they are getting all around the world too.
Week in, week out, boxing grows.
The PBC cannot keep up the quality or the relentlessness of professional boxing and the industry anymore.
They just can’t.
Because of not having the fighters, budget or ability to make the events and bouts that spectators want regularly.
At a price point the consumer wants, equally.
PBC are outliers in this regard for overcharging for PPV in the US.
They would have actually made way more money and done way more PPV buys had they had lowered the price even to $49.99.
Fighters would have got paid more as well and PBC would not be in as much trouble as it is now as well.
That is the truth of it.
The Errol Spence Jr vs Tim Tszyu fight for them all the way in Australia next month shows you PBC’s declining strength at home in America now.
They can’t compete with America or those in the market in boxing.
They have been bringing older fading stars like Keith Thurman to Australia as well recently for the same reason.
They are on their way out of boxing.
Their stable bickering like the Charlo brothers sums the PBC up.
