Usyk has done something today that has changed the game in boxing and has gone back to his old way of thinking it appears.
He is the latest to put the death nail into the coffins of the old four boxing sanctioning bodies and belt companies.
The heavyweight champion has vacated all the belts. They are all gone.
He has opted to do so rather than fight a fringe contender and look for either a more dangerous, challenging or a bigger fight for spectators.
Against someone they have heard of at least, in terms of those outside of boxing, to the mass audience of sports fans.
He is at the end of his career now so it is the right move and makes sense that if he is just having one last fight, he makes it a big one.
He has earned that right in his career from travelling all over the world and fighting and beating the best.
Granted in a weak heavyweight era but before that he was undisputed cruiserweight champion.
As well as then becoming undisputed heavyweight champion. Very few have done the two.
It is understood Usyk is not retiring like some were suggesting yesterday.
If he wanted to keep the belts he may have had to fight Agit Kabayel but that is not happening now.
Surely he will go after a big fight for his last match in boxing.
Usyk had not been himself at all this year and nearly lost to a kickboxing world champion recently whom had just one pro fight going into the match.
Usyk might be in decline but at least he wants to go out on his shield.
You have to give him that. He wants one last fight. A big one.
Who knows who it will be against but let’s see who Usyk fights next.
