Errol Spence has let slip something that not many have noticed on a dark side of him ahead of his Tim Tszyu comeback fight.
Spence is back in the ring this summer against Australian Tim Tszyu in what will be his first time in a professional boxing ring in over three years.
Not an easy fight for him. To get back in any boxing ring after that time off and to get in there with someone like that, is quite startling and concerning for Spence straight off the bat.
At a catchweight above super-welterweight as well — in a very foreign weight for him against the naturally bigger boxer in Tszyu who has campaigned at super welterweight for years — and a champion in his own right.
Not only that, a man who is active in the sport and has zero ring rust and has been fighting top tier championship competition like Sebastian Fundora and so on recently.
Spence on his side last fought against Terence Crawford and was battered badly by him into a bloody mess three years ago and stopped inside the distance.
That was after a near death experience some time before that as well where he wasted a Ferrari car in a crash.
Now, in some shoulder programming before the Tim Tszyu fight this summer, he let known that not many have picked up on yet, that he only took that Crawford fight at the time desperately for money to feed his family.
Desperation is not a good look.
And that basically he had little motivation going into the fight at all. Quite alarming stuff for a former welterweight world champion in Errol Spence to actually say, frankly.
We have said time and time again that he is too laid back and his lack of urgency and eye of the tiger and motivation is one of his biggest weaknesses.
But for a prize fighter to not be able to get up for the biggest test of his professional career in Terence Crawford, his biggest competitor, says it all about Spence.
He claimed he didn’t want to back out of the fight and was willing to sacrifice himself just for a payday for his family.
Not mentioning anywhere at all, like he should been doing, that he was focused on the biggest fight of his life and the biggest competitor of his life, and rival as a pro in America too, in the form of Terence Crawford.
Terrible outlook for a professional sportsman to have from Spence.
Crawford has since retired after defeating Canelo Alvarez on points at super-middleweight in 2025 by UD to become a pound for pound number one in boxing.
If Crawford could not get motivated to fight him three years ago, one of his biggest rivals and biggest stars in America, what makes people think he will be motivated for this comeback fight against Australian Tim Tszyu this summer after three years out of the ring?
