160 pounds had been the glamor division of boxing other than the heavies for the longest time but it is a bit under par lately in modern boxing.
It has some solid champions but to call the likes of Carlos Adames and Aaron Mckenna modern day champions of the planet in that division is a bit disingenuous.
This is happening at a time that the sport is returning to popularity all the time due to excellent match ups taking place and a plethora of boxers emerging across all divisions around the globe.
But 160 pounds is not the strongest division, the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson had once ruled it after all, comparing him to Aaron Mckenna and Carlos Adames of today’s times is frightening.
He could beat either of them one hand tied behind his back, box the ears off either and knock either out cold on a bad day for him.
In more recent times former champions Canelo Alvarez of Mexico had been a cut above current champions there too.
The Mexican campaigning more at 168 pounds in recent years but coming off a defeat in his last bout.
Gennady GGG Golovkin before him of Kazakhstan had maybe been the last proper champion in the division but he is long retired as an active fighter at this point.
Bernard Hopkins of Philadelphia maybe the last proper lineal champion, the man that beat the man, before Golovkin, that many remember.
Roy Jones of the US in that era had held the belt also of course.
This is a rare occurrence at the moment as boxing is doing excellent and actually, the pound for pound standard, particularly across the lighter divisions, has never been so high overall.
Just a bit of a lull at 160 pounds at the moment.
That usually does not last very long in professional boxing. All it takes is one punch for that next big star to emerge over night.
It happens often in boxing.
Maybe more than any other sport.
Think of Mexican-American Andy Ruiz knocking out the UK’s Anthony Joshua in a single big punch, no one had heard of him before that.
That happens all the time in boxing, one big punch changes it all.
That is maybe the reason boxing is one of the most special, entertaining sports to the masses at times.
Over night champions and stars are born all the time — 160 pounds is going to come good again soon.
