Boxing has a new middleweight champion Aaron Mckenna but there are things technically he can make much improvements on.
He got the unanimous points victory but there are things he can make better in his boxing fight game moving on from Saturday night.
Like the following;
- Sharper footwork against movers – needs better cut-off angles
- Tighter guard early – ate jabs in opening rounds
- Crisper inside punches – short shots landed as pushes, not snaps
- Set traps, not just volume – needs fakes and head movement
- Feet under him – leaned off-balance leaving counter openings
- Vary head shots – too reliant on jab and body
- Stop smothering own work – clinched too early, killed follow-ups
- Head movement vs southpaws – needs to slip outside the lead hand
- Pace management without clinching – use movement to rest, not holding
- Sharper finishing – didn’t pull the trigger when Oliha was hurt
It must be said Aaron Mckenna did a lot right also for balance.
Congrats on the victory but needs to be in there against tough opponents also next.
The division is not stacked but that is changing at the moment.
He might look at moving up to super middleweight also at some point for better fights but some of those champions are too much for him.
Someone like Canelo or Caleb Planet beats Mckenna easy.
