Mexican boxing star Canelo Alvarez has been in decline in recent times but remains one of the biggest names in the entire sport.
He got defeated by a smaller Terence Crawford last year who stepped up to defeat him on points by UD at 168 pounds.
Speaking recently, he spoke on moving to the US in his professional boxing career earlier on his career:
“I already beat everybody in Mexico. So they bring fighters from everywhere to Mexico. I was just waiting to turn 18 to come to USA.”
If you look at it, it proved to be the right decision for him.
Some notes on this:
- Turned pro at 15 in Mexico and had 22 fights there before moving to the U.S.
- Made U.S. debut on October 24, 2008, at 18 years old, beating Larry Mosley by unanimous decision in California
- Won his first world title at 20, just two years after arriving in America
- Fought 30 times in the U.S. within three years of arriving, quickly becoming a major draw
- Went on to win world titles across four weight divisions after establishing himself in the U.S.
- Became the first undisputed super middleweight champion in modern history, a feat achieved entirely on the U.S. stage
- Headlined massive Las Vegas events against Floyd Mayweather, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Miguel Cotto throughout his U.S.-based career
- Defeated Shane Mosley in 2012 as a young fighter, signaling his arrival among U.S. boxing legends
- Remained a top pound-for-pound fighter in the U.S. for over a decade across multiple weight classes
- Expanded his U.S. presence beyond boxing, recently enrolling in a California university for business studies in 2026
At the end of the day the opportunities in America proved to be far more lucrative and there proved to be many more better and bigger fights there.
Of course he had been correct in that decision.
He fights later in the year in the middle East though against a very small name opponent.
Outside of the market that made him.
He is not himself lately as he has been saying he might be done in boxing and then in another breath he has said he might have four more fights.
At the end of the day Canelo Alvarez has done more than alright in his career and delivered boxing a heck of a lot of entertaining fights.
Canelo definitely ducked David Benavidez though, that is clear in the light of day years on by this point.
