His old rival and fellow American Terence Crawford gave a breakdown of what he saw from Errol Spence tonight in boxing vs Tim Tszyu.
Tszyu got the victory tonight in outstanding fashion over the distance in Australia in what proved a huge win in boxing tonight.
He won by UD on points.
Speaking after Terence Crawford, the now retired former pound for pound number one from America said:
“From the jump, you could tell his balance was off. He was reaching. He just didn’t have it tonight. All of it. All of it. He didn’t take the punches well. He was slow. You could just tell that Tim was applying more pressure. It was kind of hard to watch. I really wanted him to do well. But he did what he had to do to finish the fight. Hopefully he comes over here. All the best to him. God bless. Yeah. He’s been in a lot of wars. With his fighting style — coming forward, taking punishment, dishing out punishment, and trying to break guys down — that style doesn’t last forever. Yeah, like I said, he was off balance and he just didn’t have it tonight. Tim did what he had to do to get the victory. He was patient, went well to the body, threw and landed the right hand when he needed to, and got the job done. I don’t see him coming back down to 154. He looked really strong at 160. So we’ll see him against guys like Carlos Adames and all those guys.”
Bill Haney also reacted to the fight a short time ago here.
Terence Crawford had beaten Spence over three years ago and it showed, Spence was done before he got in there for round one tonight.
Some notes on Spence and that fight and a few other things as well, for balance:
- Spence admitted he took the Crawford fight for the payday, not the win.
- Didn’t spar for six weeks before that Crawford fight due to a rib injury.
- Felt weak and depleted in camp and couldn’t sleep.
- Confessed he expected to lose before stepping in the ring on that night with Crawford.
- His trainer failed to prepare him for Crawford’s southpaw style at the time.
- Had a pre-existing detached retina that affected his vision.
- Never fully recovered from his 2019 car crash physically before he got in there with Crawford.
- Looked like a shell of his former self on fight night against Crawford over three years ago, as did he tonight against Tszyu.
- Admitted he considered retirement immediately after the loss even over three years ago with Crawford, it was in his mind tonight against Tszyu.
- Never mentally recovered – took years of reflection just to find peace.
Alas, Spence retired tonight after losing to Tszyu but in a sense he was already mentally done and in retirement after the Crawford defeat years ago.
Boxing is flying and will continue to see great fights and new prospects and challengers emerge all the time this year.
Well done to Tszyu on a solid win tonight.
