Errol Spence lost by UD on points tonight to Tim Tszyu and said coming into the fight tonight he had a great game plan.
He didn’t really.
He landed a few solid left hands early on and looked he was going to mix it up to the body and head well but never really got things going.
Tszyu however was more precise with his output and the stronger boxer with more conditioning that told as the bout went on.
Some key takeaways on technically were it went wrong for Spence tonight:
- Three years of ring rust – timing and output faded badly.
- Moved up to 160lbs – physically smaller than the naturally bigger Tszyu.
- Legs looked shaky from round one – wide stance and no stability.
- Faded after round five – spent long stretches covering up and holding.
- Out-landed by 33 total punches and 48 power punches.
- Started strong to the body but abandoned it despite corner’s instructions.
- Lost the jab battle – couldn’t establish his trademark weapon.
- Never found a rhythm – Tszyu controlled distance and pace.
- Lacked punching power – couldn’t hurt Tszyu when he landed.
- Slower reflexes – Tszyu timed his right hand easily all night.
The above power punch landed stat a key one for Tszyu, that right hand hit home a few times.
The uppercut impressed at times from Tszyu as well.
Spence years ago was in classes above Tszyu in terms of his boxing ability but became a bulldozing merchant over the years and went away from his boxing.
That and the fact he had declined a lot physically and he simply was not up to the fight, contributed to the loss tonight.
Terence Bud Crawford gave a breakdown of what he saw from Spence a short time ago as well, citing Tszyu the stronger and more snappier boxer as well.
Errol Spence junior retired a short time ago from the sport completely.
A wise decision.
He gave boxing much entertainment over the years and he will try to pursue other avenues next.
