Keith Thurman’s comeback proves veteran returns can succeed. Why Hasim Rahman Sr at 53 was unrealistic and his cancelled fight says it all.
Thurman’s comeback only had been successful to a point against Jarvis on the initial comeback.
He of course lost recently to Sebastian Fundora so it is difficult for veteran comeback to be successful.
Former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman is coming back apparently, very dangerous at 53, some things to note here;
- Keith Thurman returned at 37 and immediately challenged for a title after the Jarvis victory in Australia at first
- Thurman is still active and physically capable against maybe some contenders at super welterweight but past his best
- His comeback goals are realistic: title shots and legacy fights
- Hasim Rahman Sr is 53 though and last fought in 2014
- Rahman’s 2026 comeback was cancelled days before the event
- He lacks recent form and competitive activity
- Rahman aimed to break Foreman’s record, an unrealistic target

- New Date: Thursday, September 24, 2026
- New Venue: Hammond Sportsplex, Hammond, Indiana
Background and Cancelled Fight
- Rahman’s initial comeback fight was scheduled for August 18, 2026, in Rochester, New York, against Robert Simms
- That event was cancelled less than a week before it was due to take place, with ticket refunds being issued
- The new fight on September 24 replaces the cancelled bout
- The six-round fight will headline “The War on I-94” and will be streamed live on Combat Sports Now
Rahman once of course knocked out Lennox Lewis to become a heavyweight champion of the world in South Africa.
That is all the way back in 2001 though.
A quarter of a century old that fight, Lennox avenged it not long after also.
