The Disappearance of Richard Schaefer: What Happened to Mayweather Promotions' Silent CEO

Richard Schaefer was named CEO of Mayweather Promotions in 2024, then went silent. He secretly re-emerged as the mastermind behind Canelo Alvarez’s billion-dollar empire.

So Canelo claims at least.

But Floyd has gone into a state of oblivion in boxing and life this year so not much is happening at that promotional company any more.

Some things to note here for a second on the former head of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer;

  • Appointed CEO of Mayweather Promotions in 2024, replacing Leonard Ellerbe
  • Went unusually silent alongside Floyd Mayweather right after the announcement
  • Their only collaboration was a poorly promoted exhibition in Mexico
  • Disappeared from the public eye with no major announcements from the company
  • Secretly reconnected with Canelo Alvarez, whom he’d known since age 17
  • Canelo called him out of retirement to manage all his business ventures
  • Tasked with making Canelo the first billion-dollar boxer in history
  • Publicly called Canelo the smartest businessman in boxing—a subtle diss to Mayweather
  • Fueled speculation that he and Mayweather had split or stopped speaking
  • Re-emerged at Canelo vs Crawford in 2025 as Canelo’s strategic business mastermind, not Mayweather’s CEO

The thing is not clear in terms of the role Richard Schaefer still has at that company or even his role in the sport at the moment.

Apparently he is an adviser still to Canelo but not a good one, obviously, as he got him a small fight next up against Christian Mbilli.

He may not be in fact even involved in advising Canelo, to be clear on that, also.

It is like he has disappeared from boxing lately.
