Brian BoMac McIntyre turned Terence Crawford into an all-time great, but his other world champions flopped. We break down why the trainer couldn’t replicate the spark with anyone else.
It is strange that happens.
Some guys like Robert Garcia, Freddie Roach and others can do it on a professional basis, Eddy Reynoso a bit too.
Others though like Bomac it appears need to be in close connection in friendship and professional relationship in coaching boxers for it to really get going.
Billy Graham some years ago training Ricky Hatton of the UK had been like that also, they need to have an actual connection outside of boxing for it to come good at the highest level.
Bomac Mcintyre of the US did great in training Bud to some many divisions and defeating Canelo but at the same time;
- Mastered the art of training “Bud”—but no one else reached even half his level
- Turned Jamel Herring into a champ, then lost him immediately after Shakur Stevenson dismantled him
- Maurice Hooker came to BoMac after a loss and never got his career back on track
- Amir Khan used him for one fight—his final loss to Kell Brook—and that was that
- Keyshawn Davis won a title under him, then promptly left the camp without a second thought
- Chris Eubank Jr looked great in one camp, but had already been a two-weight champ before they linked up
- Rob Brant was already a former champion when BoMac trained him for one fight
- BoMac himself admits he’s “not the best trainer”—humble, or telling the truth?
- One generational talent doesn’t make a trainer great; Crawford made BoMac, not the other way around
So can you call Bomac an all time great trainer and a Hall of Famer just for really making it big in training Bud.
Tough call.
