Teofimo Lopez is coming off the back of one of the biggest drubbings of his professional boxing career so this is going back in the deep end.
New Yorker Teofimo Lopez recently was picked apart but Newark’s Shakur Stevenson in his last bout.
Stevenson won the fight earlier this year against his former rival on wide unanimous points decision.
It has now being confirmed that Teofimo Lopez will fight welterweight champion Rolly Romero next up in his return fight.
The bout will be on August 22nd in Las Vegas by all accounts.
While boxing is flying, the welterweight division has not been very strong in recent times.
Romero has not fought since winning a belt last year (from one of the old defunct belt companies now) against Ryan Garcia.
So this is a solid scrap in another wise not very strong division at 147 pounds.
Despite boxing flying as a sport and returning to the masses all the time with more talent pound for pound across all weights than maybe ever worldwide.
Romero has a lot of power in this bout and sure, Lopez moving up to 147 pounds will give Lopez some freshness, but still…
The main thing to be concerned about here is the punching power from someone like Romero with such an aggressive fan-friendly style of Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez could walk onto some bombs but he could have enough ability to stay out of the way.
Maybe not the two most smartest or intelligent boxers Lopez and Romero, they have heart and guts and are in entertaining fights regularly.
Both are on the decline slope you could say though — compared to some years ago.
Lopez in theory with his speed at 147 pounds could have too much for Rolly if he tunes in and stays focused from bell one right the way through.
That is key for him. He should have a better jab than Rolly if he uses it.
It looks like Teofimo Lopez will have a different trainer as well and has now parted company with his father.
Not on very good terms either we might add.
All in all, who knows if Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez actually happens though.
That is what they are trying to line up for the above date at the moment.
