Featherweight champion boxer Bruce Carrington is one of America’s most unknown champions

Featherweight champion boxer Bruce Carrington

It was the 250th July 4th at the weekend in the US and other than rapidly declining Donald Trump ruining it for most Americans with his trash speech — the boxing action was excellent.

The boxing this year in America made up for it a bit and there was some solid action on at the weekend.

Not many in America or anywhere worldwide outside of hardcore boxing spectators have heard of Brooklyn boxer Bruce Carrington from New York.

He is 29-ears-old and was in action at the weekend and holds one of the old now defunct belt companies’ belts in the featherweight division.

He had a solid points win via unanimous decision on points over Rene Palacios in the card in Ohio at the weekend.

People are getting to know him a bit more now finally as he went 18-0-10 KO in solid, not outstanding, but got-the-job-done — form.

If boxing was a man then the sport’s mind is only getting sharper every day and is sharper than ever with matchmaking of opponents like Carrington at the weekend.

Nicknamed ‘Shu Shu’ he fought Rene Palacios of Mexico in what was outstanding matchmaking for him at this point — in a challenging bout.

25-year-old Mexican Palacios went into the fight undefeated 19-0-1-10KO with a very similar record to Carrington.

This type of matchmaking is why boxing is doing well again. Why the fights are what matter the most.

Pitting young undefeated fighters like that against one another when it is a genuine close fight.

Boxers are losing their ‘0’ on their records all the time now and boxing is thriving again for it because of them being in solid fights in doing so.

Alas, Carrington rose to the challenge and boxed well behind more of a range finder jab than a weapon of a jab.

A counter puncher who likes to box on the outside — he has a solid defense does Carrington.

He uses his feet well as well to get in and out of the inside if he is finding himself getting into a fire fight and exchange in the pocket.

Spinning off to the side often to get back into range where he likes to do more of his at range work.

Not a one-punch knockout merchant but enough pop on his fist to keep his Mexican opponent off at the weekend.

He landed a lot of solid straight right hands and jabs.

Carrington keeps a very slim, hard to hit target for his opponents and is a conventional boxer type who is hard to land clean on.

He looks to do many things well but nothing outstanding.

He boxes on the back foot and on the ropes a little too much for our liking.

That is easily and quickly fixed.

A tall fighter at the weight he is a tough style to box and while is still a bit unkown America got to know him a bit more at the weekend just gone.

Remember the name of boxer Bruce Carrington.
