Shakur Stevenson of Newark is flying high in boxing now but boxing legend Roy Jones cooled the hype on him a bit with some sense.
American boxer Stevenson is coming off the back of his most impressive victory in boxing to date.
A unanimous points decision over Teofimo Lopez last time out earlier this year in a fight he controlled from start to finish.
Lopez was awful though and looked a shell of his former self and has even been blaming the father basically for the defeat to Stevenson recently as well.
Lopez is in decline and Stevenson had the right style to counter the aggressive Lopez fight style.
Roy Jones has brought up the chin and punch resistance of Shakur Stevenson.
Something that not many have questioned or talked about at all in boxing yet in the run of Stevenson so far as a pro boxer.
Stevenson is currently 25-0-11KO as a professional but other than Lopez — only Oscar Valdez (Mexico) and Jamel Herring (USA) are really the only big names on his resume.
Two former world champions that he beat at super-featherweight in 2021 (Herring) and 2022 (Valdez).
Jones pointed out that we have not really seen Shakur Stevenson hit with a good punch on the chin yet.
He is right.
Between Valdez and Herring and Lopez — neither of the three actual tough fighters he has fought are murderous punchers.
He mentioned as well we have not seen Stevenson hit by someone with the power as a fully fledged welterweight like Rolly Romero could hit him with.
Stevenson when he gets in there with a genuine puncher at either 140 pounds or 147 pounds might find that punching power a lot different.
He is difficult to hit but that power when it lands still leaves a lot of question marks on the chin of Stevenson and Roy Jones is quite right to question it.
When comparing Stevenson to other fighters and chins in US boxing stars at the moment — he brought up how we have seen Ryan Garcia’s chin when Gervonta Davis hit him.
He knocked Garicia out a few years back.
Shakur Stevenson just has not been really hit by a big puncher yet in any weight class.
You could say as well even at super-featherweight and at lightweight Stevenson did not really face any big punchers there either.
The jury is still out on the chin of Shakur Stevenson in boxing.
Could you imagine Shakur Stevenson fought Terence Crawford?
Crawford would have exposed his chin in that fight surely if they had fought.
Shakur Stevenson was offered a Devin Haney fight recently but remains to be looking at the moment to be ducking the fight.
