Jaron Ennis cannot get carried away after Zayas win

Jaron Boots Ennis had a very impressive knockout win over Xander Zayas but he cannot get too far ahead of himself.

It was maybe his best fight to date.

He defeated an undefeated champion inside the distance and did so in strong form.

But Xander Zayas had to make a twenty eight pound weight cut coming into their title fight at the weekend.

It showed.

His reaction times were very slow.

Speaking afterwards Ennis said he thought the fight should have been stopped in round 5.

He closed the show in round 7 in the end.

He showed excellent combinations but he was in there against a man who had no business being in the weight division anymore.

Ennis gave himself a C rating performance after the fight and maybe that is accurate.

Zayas is moving up to 160 pounds surely after that savage weight cut and Ennis wished him well.

Ennis also mentioned him and his coach would go back into training in the lab this week straight away.

To look at ways immediately to take over the 154 pounds weight division.

Ennis was impressive but Zayas was not some pound for pound rated boxer in the top 10 of the P4P ratings either.

Let’s not get too carried away with the win from Boots Ennis at the weekend.

His opponent fought valiantly and showed courage and the Xander Zayas stock went up in defeat.

But we did not really learn anything new about Ennis.

Zayas’ style was tailored made for him and he had badly weight drained himself to make the weight.

That said, options are plentiful for Jaron Ennis next up.

He moves into the top 10 of the Boxing News and Views pound for pound rankings for now.

Let’s see what fight Jaron Ennis takes on next in the sport.
