The David Benavidez vs Canelo fight ship has sailed for a few things to factor in at this point Boxing News and Views believes.
Canelo Alvarez has flat out said at this point now that the fight could have happened if both were at 168 pounds which just isn’t the case anymore.
It looks like Alvarez will under no circumstance change his mind ever. He will not budge from 168 pounds and go up to light-heavyweight or higher to meet Benavidez.
So that’s it. That will never change.
Canelo Alvarez doesn’t need him anyway as he is still the main draw in boxing basically.
Even though he’s coming off a loss to Terence Crawford in 2025 and makes his comeback soon in September against Christian Mbilli.
Anyway, Benavidez himself is at much higher weights now and is ahead of Canelo in the pound for pound rankings for us.
He just had the biggest and best win of his life stopping Gilberto Ramirez to become cruiserweight champion.
He’s been talked about in fights at the weight with Jai Opetaia and even possible fights at light-heavyweight with champion Dmitry Bivol there.
So, he doesn’t need him in terms of what he is doing now.
He does need Canelo more than Canelo needs him though and Canelo simply doesn’t want the fight to happen.
So it won’t.
It is simple as that.
Boxing is returning to the masses anyway without the fight so full steam ahead to boxing’s continued triumphant return in 2026.
