It is Cinco de Mayo fight weekend in boxing in 2026 this weekend and it is always one of the biggest weekend’s in boxing in the entire sport’s calendar every year.
It is Mexico’s national holiday but big fights in America and around the world often happen both involving Mexicans and Mexican-Americans on the date.
Traditionally Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in recent years has occupied this date every year, every weekend in boxing over the years, as the country’s biggest boxing star they have had for years.
But not this year in 2026 for the first time in many years strangely enough.
Alvarez lost in a huge fight last September to Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford and has stepped away from the sport for now as he gets some repair from some injuries and so on.
He comes back in September on another big weekend for Mexico but this weekend is the big one with the Cinco de Mayo weekend fight night involving David Benavidez and Gilberto Ramirez.
Both have been in big fights but the fact it is the main Cinco De Mayo weekend fight this year in 2026 adds a new dimension and level of notoriety that neither will have seen in any of their fights in their professional boxing career ever before.
This is something to be aware of for both old and new fans to boxing.
This will bring about maybe a sense of added pressure or even overly prideful emotions from possibly either boxer, which can be not good if they get too involved in a barn burner and totally abandon their boxing ability completely.
They have to deliver some action in the ring as that is what Mexican and Mexican-American boxers are typically known for when they get in there and fight.
Especially in the main headliner this year in the Cinco de Mayo fight for 2026.
The fight is in Vegas as well in the US and although not Mexico, Mexicans will travel to see the fight as will Mexicans already in the US and in the State in a place for boxing that has become almost like a second home for big fights involved Mexican boxers or champions of Mexican-American heritage.
This will add to a fiery atmosphere when they get in there and fight come fight night.
Don’t write off the passionate Mexican fans in there cheering on their fighter not being something either.
That is something to calculate when making your fight prediction this weekend.
The Mexican music will be flowing, the Tecate beers on tap, the burritos at the ready, the Sombreros sported by many, ahead of what will as always be a special excellent weekend for boxing as it is every year.
If you’re a boxing fan you can’t miss Cinco De Mayo weekend.
It is that simple.
David Benavidez will try to become a three-weight world champion.
