Why Tyson Fury never recaptured his 2015 magic—brutal wars, lost legs, mental battles, and the decline of a boxing great.
Fury had been a superb boxer back in the day.
This year proved he cannot cope at the highest level of the sport anymore though, back to back poor comeback fights.
His Klitschko victory in Germany years ago his prime, some notes on this;
- The Wilder trilogy took everything – John Fury says those wars “finished him” and left him with nothing left physically
- His legs are gone – father John admitted Fury’s movement and footwork never recovered from the Wilder beatings
- Weight and fitness issues – bulked up to 20 stone and struggled to get in peak condition for Usyk fights
- Lost the hunger – Carl Froch says Fury knows he’s past his best and retired because he’s frustrated and “pissed off” with himself
- Mental health battles – depression, drink, and drugs derailed him after Klitschko, costing him prime years
- Never the same after the layoff – the 2.5-year hiatus from boxing took an irreplaceable toll on his prime
- Failed to adapt tactically – uncle Peter Fury says his approach against Usyk was all wrong, standing back instead of using his size, he said at the time.
- Overcomplicated training camps – nutritionist says preparations became too complex instead of just making him super fit
- Emotional volatility – the same manic energy that beat Klitschko became a liability as he aged
- The fire is gone – from the fearless 27-year-old who dethroned a king, to a 37-year-old shadow, the “Spartan” spirit flickered but never fully returned
He looked like he fell out at times in some of his inner circle but more than anything he did not have that desire this year.
Far from it.
The reasons for that only he could tell you.
Tyson Fury as that apex heavy hitting champ that defeated Klitschko is not there at this point.
He is gone.
If he retires soon, that is up to him.
Alas, all in all, boxing is returning back to the masses in popularity but Tyson Fury is not coming back to his best as the sport does.
