Jab control, power difference, and avoiding emotional mistakes — technical keys for Rolly Romero to beat Teofimo Lopez on Aug 22.
Lopez is on the slide as a fighter but he is moving up to 147 pounds and needs to be taken serious by Romero.
He is doing so you’d have to think. Lopez is a shell of his former self but Rolly must consider some of this:
- Teofimo’s jab-heavy attack – will use it constantly to close distance
- Can’t rush in – Lopez feasts on emotional, over-aggressive opponents
- Rolly’s welterweight power is real – hits harder than Lopez’s recent opposition
- Unorthodox timing – awkward, random power punches disrupt rhythm fighters
- Defensive holes – lunging with chin exposed has gotten him stopped before
- Stay calculated – the patient version who beat Garcia is his best chance
- Lopez can be inconsistent – if he’s passive, Rolly must capitalize
- Make it ugly – roughhouse, lean on Lopez, test his chin at welterweight
- No emotional meltdowns – must stay cool and avoid reckless responses
- Respect Teofimo’s speed – fast-twitch reactions and leaping counters are dangerous
If Rolly Romero can be mindful and cognizant of some of the above, he might do more than alright in the fight this month.
Rolly has some punch snap and if he connects, he can hurt Teofimo Lopez you’d have to expect.
Styles make fights and these are aggressive boxers that come at their opponents usually.
Roll on the fight.
