Canelo has slipped in most people's pound for pound rankings but does he remain the number one draw in the boxing

Canelo Alvarez looks to have fallen across most pound for pound rankings lists and continues to do so at the Boxing News and Views’ rankings.

This is a simple one. Due to inactivity and performance.

He lost his last fight to a much smaller opponent in Terence Crawford who stepped up two entire weight divisions last year to fight him.

And then defeated him easily on points by unanimous decision in Las Vegas over twelve rounds at super-middleweight (168 pounds).

He has not been fighting frequently enough besides this in recent years as well.

Canelo Alvarez has ducked David Benavidez for years now too and that is coming home to roost for him in pound for pound debates.

He gets back in the ring this September as well — at least that is what he is planning to do.

Taking a year off after the Terence Crawford defeat last year and then to get back in there with a low level opponent next after such a huge event is not impressive.

For Canelo to be fighting Christian Mbilli in September is very poor form of him for spectators worldwide.

No one outside of boxing has heard of Mbilli and Alvarez should beat him easy.

To go from Crawford, the best pound for pound boxer of his era, to then take a year out and come back against an unknown like Mbilli, is taking a liberty with spectators.

The same ones that made him the biggest draw in the entire sport of boxing as well.

He still is the number one draw in the sport in terms of worldwide ahead of the likes of Ryan Garcia, Gervonta Davis and so on.

‘Tank’ Davis barely boxes anymore though and Ryan Garcia is still to properly confirm his next fight formally just yet (expected to be Conor Benn).

Alvarez has been criticized a lot in the US, Mexico and worldwide this year for taking too long to comeback from the Crawford fight.

And for his opponent choice.

You can’t blame spectators for doing this in boxing.

He is also in the lower half of most top 10 pound for pound boxing rankings including our own at Boxing News and Views.

You can understand why now.
