Terence Crawford is retired a while now but a small few are still calling for him to fight Jaron Boots Ennis.
People forget the fight was supposedly offered to Ennis when Crawford was an active fighter.
He ducked Crawford and wanted nothing to do with him.
Because he knew at the time it was a fight that would have seen him lose.
Crawford went on to take a huge fight instead anyway and rightly so — against Canelo Alvarez.
Seeing him step up all the way to the super-middleweight division to beat a previous pound for pound great in Alvarez.
Ennis had a solid win at the weekend just gone by knocking out a former undefeated but lesser known champion in Xander Zayas.
That does not mean Jaron Ennis is some sort of pound for pound rated number one boxer in the world like Terence Crawford was.
Ennis gets hit easily but slow boxers like Zayas and Crawford would have boxed him easy.
The Crawford jab was much more powerful and precise than Ennis’.
Ennis is lazy with it at times.
Ennis tends to do his best work at middle to longer range but Crawford could fight on the inside, outside and at middle distance.
Crawford defensively would not give Ennis the opportunities to hit him like Zayas did either.
Crawford would be counter punching Ennis and doing so on his terms.
Never on Ennis’ — he would have commanded control of the ring and dictated the pace of the fight on his terms.
Not Ennis’.
Crawford went all the way to 168 pounds and schooled a fighter like Canelo who had fought the best in his generation.
Canelo fought the likes of Mayweather, Golovkin, Cotto and many others.
Ennis has fought no one.
Xander Zayas was the first sort of name on his record but he is not a name at all compared to the form book of Crawford.
Crawford would have knocked Jaron Ennis out and that is the truth of it.
Ennis leads in with his uppercuts and hook combinations at times and does not have enough feints and traps he uses to set up his attacks regularly.
Someone as crafty as Crawford would have been patient with him and dissected him after a few rounds.
Toyed with him, bust him and knocked him out when he wanted to.
That is the truth of it.
Jaron Ennis needs to worry about fighters of his own era like fighting his rival Vergil Ortiz.
Terence Crawford is retired from boxing.
