A Terence Crawford vs Jaron Ennis fight, sure, would be outstanding. But, we have to be real here. There are some things at play.
Jaron Boots Ennis successfully moved up to super-welterweight (154 pounds) at the weekend and had an excellent introduction.
Busting up and stopping in round 7 a brave but weight-drained and slower Xander Zayas.
Zayas by all accounts will go up to 160 pounds and try to stop killing himself to make 154 pounds.
Straight away a small sub section of media are clamoring for the Jaron Ennis vs Terence Crawford fight.
Not happening.
Both gifted American boxer of this generation but Crawford retired after dismantling Canelo Alvarez up at 168 pounds last year in Las Vegas.
Crawford has since been saying since Ennis won at the weekend that he would be ten steps ahead of Ennis and would beat him easily, basically.
Some are saying that Terence Crawford retired to avoid the Jaron Ennis fight but that is very far from the case.
Crawford would have wiped him out inside the distance definitely if boxing to his best.
Why would Crawford avoid someone like Ennis who campaigned at welterweight mostly when Bud Crawford was an active fighter?
And go up instead all the way to super-middleweight to take on at the time one of the world’s pound for pound best boxers in Saul Canelo Alvarez?
That makes no sense.
Crawford did not duck Ennis but there was little interest in the fight outside of hardcore spectators of the sport.
He made maybe twenty times as much money by fighting Canelo Alvarez instead.
And won.
And retired as the pound for pound number one boxer at the time.
Let that sink in.
Sure, Crawford is a competitor — but he is done in boxing.
He is not coming back to fight Jaron Boots Ennis and a small few people need to get real about this.
There are new champions, prospects and contenders coming through now in the US and all over the world in boxing anyway.
As is always the case in professional boxing and in all professional sport.
There are some parallels to be drawn however when looking at the sweet science runs of both Jaron Boots Ennis and Terence Bud Crawford.
Crawford like Ennis did not have a star personality per se and went under the radar without fame in the US and worldwide for a while.
Up until near the end of his career when he made the big bucks and was in the super fight with Canelo in 2025 — and fights leading up to it.
Ennis is not a big sell in terms of professional athletes in terms of having a big personality either.
He is more brash than the quieter Crawford as well.
He is not on the same level as boxing ability as Crawford though and has not fought anyone near the level of Crawford.
Crawford beat and sometimes even stopped many excellent fighters like Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Jeff Horn, Viktor Postol, Shawn Porter, Errol Spence and Canelo Alvarez at the end.
Finishing on a career record of 42-0.
Ennis has basically out of his 36-0 record resume only just beat his first real name on his resume in the form of Xander Zayas.
Come on, you can’t compare the two boxers.
Xander Zayas while he boxed bravely at the weekend is not on the same level as some of the above world champions on Crawford’s resume.
Australian Jeff Horn for instance even beat eight-division world champion Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
Let’s see who Ennis tries to fight next.
