The Devin Haney vs Shakur Stevenson fight out of nowhere has come about and is unexpected but exciting news.
This follows manager and father of welterweight champion from the US Devin Haney, Bill Haney, saying that it is Stevenson they want instead of Keyshawn Davis.
He is right too.
While Keyshawn Davis moving up to 147 pounds from 140 pounds is a great fight as well it is not as good a fight as the Stevenson vs Haney fight.
A more difficult fight for Haney but a far bigger one.
Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson are two of the bigger emerging young champions and names in the US and know one another for a long time in the sport.
They go way back and now represent two of the big names in American boxing and crucially, both are flying high.
It is not clear just yet how talks are going but some have said recently that Haney vs Keyshawn Davis is going to happen.
All signs were pointing to this but if the Stevenson fight is there they should take that fight instead.
A more challenging fight but a bigger fight and a better fight for the sport and spectators in the US and worldwide of boxing.
Stevenson would have the speed edge of course but going all the way up to welterweight to face a bigger, stronger champion in Devin Haney would present real problems for Stevenson.
Size and strength does not win boxing matches, ability does, and defensively Stevenson has the ability to make it a tough night for Haney if he were to use the jab and keep things at range.
But Haney is a strong boxer himself and his jab excellent and will look to think he can out match Stevenson in the strength department and lean on him early if they go for this fight.
Talks are however though that a possible fight between the two could happen at a catchweight of 144 pounds between super lightweight and welterweight so that favors Stevenson immediately.
Advantage Shakur Stevenson if they make the fight there.
Haney has more experience as a professional in boxing as well having never lost in thirty three professional contests to date in boxing.
Bill Haney must realize that there are no rules any longer when it comes to the old four boxing sanctioning bodies with their old world title belts.
They have lost all power now and the reason boxing is doing well again and returning to the masses as a sport this year has nothing to do with them.
It is to do with the quality of the fights that people in the US and around the world are really interested in watch boxing again.
Due to the standard of fights being better than it has been in many years.
Sure, Devin Haney just won the belt in a great win over Brian Norman Jr and the belt is nice to have but there are so many new belts forming in boxing now anyway.
So much so that people do not care about the belts and if Devin Haney wanted like many are doing now he could vacate the belt easy.
And box Shakur Stevenson instead for much bigger money and as well at the same time not have to pay any sanctioning fees.
While also getting bigger sponsorship deals in America and other revenues from the fight based on the fight being bigger, and better.
Many are doing the same at the moment not just in America but worldwide as the sport continues to return to the masses due to great fights happening all the time.
