The Ryan Garcia welterweight move has been live a while now per say but it still brings up some things on him.
Yes he had a solid win for a title over Mario Barrios already this year.
But actually, if you look a little beneath the surface of that, Barrios was very bad on the night and a had shockingly poor night at the office.
Some things to remember here:
- Garcia carries elite speed and power but faces questions on stamina in longer fights.
- The weight move still tests his frame against bigger, stronger punchers.
- Concerns remain about his chin and recovery from past tough moments.
- Durability questions linger over 12 rounds at the new weight.
Also, Barrios was not a big hitter, not a big puncher.
If he fights someone like Devin Haney in a rematch or Conor Benn next like he said, that is a very different test at welterweight.
Ryan Garcia is over in Japan at the moment looking at fights there as well — after being drafted in as an advisor for Terence Crawford’s new promotional company in Japan.
Who knows what fights he’ll be in but the jury is still out on 147 pounds for now in our view.
He looked fast at the weight but his punch resistance and power need to be evaluated against other high standard competition.
