Here is the full David Benavidez reaction post-fight a short time ago to defeating Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez to become three-weight world champion.
He did so by round six knockout tonight.
The full post-fight press conference has taken place now and here was the David Benavidez reaction a short time ago:
On facing Bivol and other champions:
“To be honest, I can’t answer that question. I don’t know what these people are thinking. If they’re real champions like they say they are, they should have no problem taking this fight. I’m not trying to be disrespectful to Dmitry Bivol — I don’t think he’s going to get scared away. He’s a great champion. But at the end of the day, this is boxing. That’s why we’re here — to give the best of ourselves. I’m doubted all the time, but every time I step in the ring, I show what type of fighter I am. I’m ready to fight whoever — 200 lbs, 175 lbs, wherever. I’m here to test myself and test my greatness.”
On his performance on Cinco de Mayo weekend:
“I feel really great. I feel like I’m really starting to come into my own. Everything I say, I do. I said I was going to beat David Morrell, Caleb Plant, Anthony Yarde, and Zurdo Ramirez. I’m gaining a lot of confidence in myself. What used to feel like a dream — becoming great — I now know is my destiny. I’m very happy to have this type of performance on Cinco de Mayo weekend in the United States.”
On wanting to be an exciting fighter and role model:
“I want to follow in the footsteps of my idol, Manny Pacquiao. Funny enough, me and Manny Pacquiao have the same birthday, so I feel like we have the same fire. I just want to give fans these types of exciting fights because when I was a little kid, that’s what excited me — crazy knockouts and stoppages. I want to motivate the younger generation the same way the old generation motivated me. I want to be a positive influence and show that if you believe in yourself 100% and are ready to take chances, you can accomplish anything in life.”
On fighting Jai Opetaia and Zuffa/Dana White:
“I think that’s the biggest fight in the world at this weight division, and it’s definitely a fight I want. Like I said, I’m not scared of anybody — this is Monster’s world. If he wants that fight, we can make it happen. I don’t know why he went to Zuffa. We could have made this fight right after this one. I don’t want to fight for a Zuffa title. I respect Jai Opetaia a lot — he’s a great fighter — but he has to come back over here to make these fights happen because we can’t make fights in Zuffa. Fighters are definitely losing their power by going over there. There’s a lot of politics involved. It looks like Dana White doesn’t want to do fights with PBC or DAZN. If we can come to an agreement and make a big fight, let’s do it.”
Who knows what will happen Benavidez next but tonight was a solid win and a great night for the sport of boxing.
