David Benavidez at the moment has been contemplating moving up from light-heavyweight to the cruiserweight division next up but will he really make the move though?
That remains to be seen.
It wasn’t long ago that he was in the super-middleweight division and he did well there but he moved up to light-heavyweight then, he won his world title belt not in the ring however and it was awarded for him.
He had a win over David Morrell but surely he wants to win big fights at light-heavyweight first to win the belt in the ring outright firstly.
He claims that Dmitry Bivol doesn’t want to fight him and others at light-heavyweight but Bivol has been on the mend from heavy surgery and is only now getting back into heavy training ahead of a comeback from the surgery.
Cruiserweight is a great division at the moment however and Gilberto Ramirez is a Mexican monster in his own right and champion in the division.
A fight for Benavidez there however carries risk and reward.

The rewards are obvious, better star status which will increase his fight purses and becoming a three-weight world champion, though he still is yet to win his world title at 175 pounds in the ring.
Same for current WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley, that belt was given to him after Usyk vacated it due to not enough interesting fights basically.
There’s a few risks up at cruiserweight for Benavidez, getting battered and knocked out being the main one.
Losing his undefeated unbeaten record another, although, minor one.
The other might be going up in weight and then coming back down in weight again then to light-heavyweight. The higher the weights go in boxing usually it is more difficult even for some of the best boxers to move up and then go back down.
Remember Roy Jones going from middleweight champion all the way up to heavyweight to defeat John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight championship some years ago now?
He wasn’t the same fighter when he went back to light-heavyweight after and fought Antonio Tarver, he lost but it was due to the physical moves in weight at such a high weight.
Not exactly the same for Benavidez coming from super-middleweight up to cruiserweight but cruiserweight is just under heavyweight, something for him to be mindful of.
The Jai Opetaia fight for Benavidez might be a big fight for him at cruiserweight at some point.
