Biggest Irish Fight in years takes place in summer show of the fighting Irish

It is not often in modern times where a fight between two high profile professional boxers from Ireland takes place.

Mick Conlan, a decorated amateur and undefeated professional (15-0-8 KO) will take on former world champion TJ Doheny (22-2-16 KO) at the Marquee in Falls Park, Belfast on August 6th.

Perhaps a bout that has gone under the radar a bit internationally, undeservedly so.

The merits of the fight both from a boxing fan-friendly clash of styles, story line of the all-Irish nature of the contest and the fact the best boxing fans in the world, Belfast boxing fans, have been starved of a fight like this in some time, makes it genuinely compelling and worth time.

Palpable atmosphere guaranteed.

For hometown fighter Conlan, it represents the acid test of his professional career thus far.

It provides an opportunity to execute on everything he’s learned over the last four years as a professional fighter.

Granted, in nearly the last couple of years or so, under adverse conditions.

Given the world situation.

Same for his opponent of course.

For County Portlaois’ Doheny — now fighting out of New South Wales, Australia — he will be looking to tear up that Conlan script.

He’ll be intent on bouncing back from a loss in Dubai back in March of last year.

One that came via unanimous decision.

Moreover, having lost his world title in 2019 by majority decision to Daniel Roman, this also signifies an opportunity back in the big time.

Doheny at 34 and Conlan at 29 are maybe at different stages of their careers but both will want it.

Equally as bad.

For different reasons — come August 6th.

‘The fighting Irish’ is a term often used for historic and cultural reference.

It is more than apt for these two boxers.

Guaranteed to do one thing.

Fight their hearts out and give boxing fans an entertaining night of boxing.
