He’s been a knockout hit in his pro career so far, has Wilder. But the acid test will come when he has to fight the likes of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

His two main rivals surely in the heavyweight division. A weight class that is teeming with life once again. Thankfully.

In an interview with Kevin Iole on YouTube Wilder said that he could “easily” beat Mayweather and Rocky Marciano’s unbeaten records.

Was he getting ahead of himself a bit?

There’s a long way to go yet and I know what your thinking, fighters are supposed to think that – and they are – but how many heavyweight dreams came crashing down over the years in boxing from fighters looking too far ahead?

Plenty of them.

Heavyweight boxing is so unpredictable, too.

It would be a massive accomplishment for a heavyweight champion in today’s landscape, whom on average only fights twice a year, to reach 50-0 or surpass it.

Not impossible of course. But fighters just are not fighting as regularly as they once seemed to.

On the whole, the shift seems to have gone to more promoting bigger events. Fights that take time to build-up and ultimately – sell.

For now, lets hope to see Wilder in at least one unification fight in 2018. I’d settle for that anyway – but if he fought three times – superb.
