Stephen Smith Issues Statement Following Freak Ear Injury

Boxer Stephen Smith suffered a horrendous injury this weekend to his ear during a fight in Las Vegas shown live on HBO.

The Liverpool native lost a technical decision after nine rounds to Francisco Vargas following a clash of heads that resulted in his ear nearly been ripped off.

One of the most grotesque injuries in recent boxing memory for sure. Although Smith seems to handle it well to be fair to him.

The fight was forced to then go to the scorecards of which Vargas was ahead on at the time.

It was feared the injury could be severe enough to keep him in the States in hospital for a few days, but Smith confirmed today in a statement on Twitter that he was able to get the injury stitched up fine.

Everyone at Boxing News and Views wishes him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in the ring soon.

32-year-old Smith has fought for a world title on two occasions before and will be hoping it will be third time lucky in 2018 when he returns.
