The Antonio Margarito Carson Jones result and how the fight ended in general came in for a lot of controversy across the board.

The super-welterweight bout took place in Mexico last night and was stopped in the 7th round in favor of Margarito during a period of success for travelling American Carson Jones.

At the time of the stoppage, the referee ruled that a clash of heads earlier in the fight had caused the cut on Margarito’s eye that caused the fight to be stopped – thus needing to go to the scorecards.

Margarito was then given a technical decision as it was revealed it was ahead on the scorecards to the surprise of many.

The controversial win gives Margarito his third straight on the trot now since suffering defeat to Miguel Cotto in their rematch a couple of years back.

Indeed, Margarito is hunting a trilogy with his old Puerto Rican rival and has been vocal about it all week.

Margarito’s form and stamina might make him a considerable underdog going into any such fight however.

His last three wins coming by technical decision, split decision and unanimous decision against opposition considerably less than Cotto.

Margairto now 39 and Cotto 36 are both coming to the final stage of their careers this year one suspects. Time will tell if they will close it out with a fight against each other.
