‘Tank’ Gervonta Davis scores knockout victory tonight in Las Vegas amid a strange fight that seemed to annoy a lot of people overall.
There was no world title on the line tonight for Davis after he lost it at the scales yesterday for failing to make weight.
The former IBF featherweight champion was keen to put on a show however, perhaps overly so as he put on some showboating which some felt was unnecessary:
The crowd were not pleased with the showboating as the fight wore on in his bout with previously undefeated Puerto Rican Francisco Fonseca.
Indeed, when the final punch came that ended the contest Davis received a chorus of boos from the crowd after this blow:
The replays afterwards appear to show the punch that ended the fight was an illegal rabbit punch behind the back of the head.
Davis’ celebration after winning in this manner also left a lot to be desired.
While Davis is still young and obviously has massive potential, talks of a possible showdown with Vasyl Lomachenko are surely premature at this point.
It is thought that Davis will have to move up to the same weight class as him however (super-featherweight) in his next fight after failing to make weight for tonight’s bout.
