Possible Spanner In The Works For GGG vs Canelo

The Best Fight In Boxing

A new possible spanner in the works for a GGG vs Canelo mega fight in 2017. One that might not surprise some.

GGG vs Canelo could be on the rocks. Again.

Yeah, I know, how many times have we heard that before – right? However, there is a genuine feeling that it’s now or never (2017 that is) for this year being the year it happens.

Timing is everything and the fight has been bubbling for a couple of years. No one wants a repeat of the five year weight we all had for Mayweather vs Pacquiao.

The sport can’t afford to do that again. Although Golovkin vs Canelo when it does happen will be an action fight either way you slice it.

That’s if it happens in September as previously thought.

In a conference call this week documented by the folks at Ring TV Golden Boy (Canelo’s promoter) said they are remaining open to the possibility of making a Canelo vs David Lemieux fight.

Lemieux fights Marco Reyes next month on May 6th as part of the Canelo vs Chavez Jr Cinco De Mayo show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

While no doubt Canelo vs Lemieux fight would be a fun one from a style perspective, given the punching ability and fan-friendly style of both fighters, it’s just not a GGG vs Canelo fight.

If a GGG vs Canelo match were not to happen in 2017 because of a Lemieux vs Canelo fight happening instead – expect all out fan revolt.

It has been building too long now. Too much talk for it not to happen. Both guys have kept winning. 2017 is the time, surely.

Although Canelo must first deal with the considerable task of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a few short weeks in Las Vegas. A great fight in itself too.
