Martin Murray Thinks There’s Only One Way To Beat Golovkin

British middleweight Martin Murray is a man who knows a thing or two about Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin having not only shared the ring with him, but taken him further than most have in recent years.

Martin Murray (33-4-1-16KO) to those not familiar with him, is a four-time world title challenger who has to date just come up short at the final hurdle when losing in world title bids to Golovkin, Sergio Martinez, Felix Sturm and Arthur Abraham.

The man from St. Helens in the UK has had a tough life having in his younger days spent a time in prison but upon release, proved exactly why boxing can be such a special sport when it turned his life around through his dedication and will to improve in the craft as a professional.

He’s travelled the world over and fought some of the best fighters of his generation, never turning away from a challenge and always keen to improve his skill set and fight game, despite his relatively late start to the pro game in comparison to perhaps some of his rivals.

The hardened UK warrior shared the ring unsuccessfully with Gennady Golovkin in February of last year in Monte Carlo, Monaco, but managed to take the fearsome ‘GGG’ eleven full rounds, something that not many do and gave more than a good account of himself in the process.

Recently when speaking to Ringside TV, Murray gave his opinion on the only way anyone can beat Golovkin in his view:

“You’ve got to hold the centre of the ring and you’ve got to push him back, but I don’t think there’s anybody strong enough out there at middleweight who can do that.”

Many have tried to outbox Golovkin and be cautious with him in the early rounds, only to find themselves getting worn down gradually as the bout progressed and eventually stopped by the power and precision of the middleweight champion.

Murray’s theory holds some weight if you look at some of the early success Kell Brook had against Golovkin recently, who took the fight to him at times, and even put him on the back foot on more than one occasion.

Obviously the naturally smaller Brook was always going to succumb to the power of Golovkin, but it would be interesting to see if a big hitting middleweight could push Golovkin back in the future, while also then boxing, moving and keeping out of the way of what’s coming back.
