This weekend American welterweights Errol Spence Jr and Chris Algieri will throw down at the Barclays Center in New York.
It’s a fight where the highly touted southpaw Errol Spence Jr is a favourite to win, with bookmakers placing him around the 1/10 mark outright to emerge victorious.
However, Chris Algieri is a decent test at this stage of the talented Texan’s career development, at least for my dollar, with Algieri only ever losing twice in his career to top level competition in Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan (both whom he took the distance).
Algieri is also coming into this fight after bouncing back with a win last December over Erick Bone at the same venue where he will fight again tomorrow night, so he might have an extra spring in his step when he walks through the Barclays Center entrance this weekend.
If Spence Jr (19-0-16KO) were to stop Algieri, it would be quite the statement to the welterweight division.
In terms of what the fighters are making, ESPN’s Dan Rafael revealed that Algieri’s purse will be the biggest this weekend on the PBC on NBC television card, while also noting some of the undercard’s fight purses:
