Opetaia vs. Benavidez: The Cinco de Mayo Dream Fight Both Sides Verbally Agree To — But Can It Actually Happen?

Jai Opetaia and David Benavidez have verbally agreed to a Cinco de Mayo showdown.

They both got in the ring a short time ago at the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn fight in Las Vegas and said as much a short time ago at least.

This is their planned fight and on paper, sure, a solid one for spectators. It could and should have happened tonight though.

Benavidez shall be expected to be victorious coming in off the back of the Gilberto Ramirez stoppage last Cinco De Mayo, Jai Opetaia victorious tonight but he got hurt.

Some notes on the above straight off the bat;

  • Verbal Agreement: Both sides have publicly called for the fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend 2027, they said they agreed tonight, only a verbal one though.
  • Benavidez Sr. Leading Push: Jose Benavidez Sr. has directly messaged organizers requesting the fight .
  • Opetaia’s Challenge: Opetaia publicly accused Benavidez of “making demands” while avoiding the fight .
  • Style Clash: Opetaia’s footwork and in-and-out movement vs. Benavidez’s high-volume pressure .
  • Size Advantage: Opetaia is a natural 200-pounder; Benavidez trains at 200 but fights at 175 .
  • Power Edge: Opetaia has 24 KOs in 30 wins; Benavidez has 26 in 32 .

Jai Opetaia got a TKO a short time ago in Vegas tonight in boxing.

David Benavidez had been in action also recently against a small name opponent also.

Let’s see if the fight actually happens, though.
