Rolly Romero hurt Teofimo Lopez but couldn’t close the show. Here’s what the former champ could have done differently to win the decision in Vegas.
First off, he needed to be more busy in his punch volume.
He landed the better shots you could say in spots in the fight but output counts.
Some notes on technical improvements for Rolly in tonight’s boxing a short time ago in live boxing results from Vegas;
- Thrown more punches earlier instead of waiting for the perfect counter
- Increased his output after hurting Lopez in the fifth round instead of backing off
- Attacked the cut over Lopez’s eye more aggressively once it opened
- Landed more body shots—he threw just 7 to the body all fight
- Cut off the ring instead of allowing Lopez to circle and jab from distance
- Been more active in the championship rounds instead of throwing only 2 punches in the final round
- Let his hands go in combination rather than loading up on single power shots
- Pressured Lopez against the ropes instead of fighting at mid-range where Lopez could pot-shot him
- Thrown more jabs—he landed only 9 compared to Lopez’s 62
- Trusted his power and taken more risks in the later rounds when he knew he was behind on the cards
He needed to be a bit more subtle in there a bit, not as a much of a bulldozer mentality.
Alongside being busier in his punch output, it had been a close fight in the end though.
Much closer than Lopez said before hand.
