what Teofimo Lopez could have done better against Rolly Romero

Teofimo Lopez got the win but made mistakes too—especially in the fifth round.

The three division champion displayed some courage and toughness to battle back from adversity but his boxing game had declined, clearly.

Years ago he would have mopped the floor against Rolly Romero but a close majority points decision got him a close victory tonight.

Some things he could have done better in there;

  • Used more head movement to avoid Rolly’s counter left hook that caught him in the fifth round
  • Not backed straight up when hurt—circled or clinched instead of letting Rolly swarm him
  • Varied his attack more instead of mostly jabbing and going to the body
  • Threw more power punches to the head—only 7 of his 62 landed power shots went upstairs
  • Kept his right hand up higher to avoid the overhand counters Rolly was loading up on
  • Stepped in with more feints to draw Rolly’s counters and make him pay for them
  • Been more patient in the later rounds instead of forcing exchanges when Rolly was already inactive
  • Worked the jab to the body more instead of exclusively to the head
  • Cut off the ring better so Rolly Romero couldn’t circle away and reset his defense so easily
  • Finished stronger—he coasted in spots instead of putting an exclamation mark on a close decision

He got the victory tonight and Teofimo Lopez displayed toughness in the fight but looking at it he is on a major decline as a boxer at this point.
