A decade of friendship and 23 years of boxing history culminate on August 22. Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez finally settle their rivalry in the ring.
Both are definitely talkers and there has been much talk ahead of Saturday night, no doubt.
But that counts for nothing of course, the first bell going does for round one.
Some notes on this being a long time in the making;
- Both started as Team USA teammates in 2015
- Became sparring partners and close friends
- Rolly Romero saved Lopez’s career by talking him off the ledge
- Lopez returned the favor with financial support
- Rolando Rolly Romero won a welterweight title by beating Ryan Garcia in 2025
- Lopez lost his 140-pound belt to Stevenson in January 2026
- Fight was offered just six weeks after Lopez’s loss
- Lopez demanded the fight after feeling disrespect from Romero
- Careers evolved separately but always circled back to each other
- Saturday at T-Mobile Arena—the talking finally ends
The fight has actually been naturally building all the days since the amateurs right up to the pros.
The entire time this fight has been building and building naturally and organically, culminating in soon the contest on Saturday night.
Roll on.
