Why is Mark Magsayo considered one of boxing’s most underrated Filipinos?
Tough to call.
The thirty one year old Filipino is 29-2-0-19 KO at the moment, his only defeats coming to Rey Vargas and Brandon Figueroa back in 2023 and 2022 at this point.
He had a solid victory this year back in April in Vegas over
Feargal McCrory, some notes on Magasayo for those unfamiliar;
- Holds a statement win over Gary Russell Jr.
- Beat four ranked opponents in the featherweight division
- Promotional disputes have kept him unfairly inactive
- Moved up to lightweight and no longer struggles with weight
- Shows improved stamina and power at his new weight
- Won four straight fights since losing his title
- Promotional issues hurt his ranking more than losses did
- Overlooked in discussions of top Filipino fighters
- Signed with US promoters to secure bigger fights
- Poised for a career resurgence at a fresh weight class
He is a former featherweight champion of the world but has been a bit inactive lately, that is changing again though.
Such an underrated boxer, in a time of great Filipino boxers, he can go a lot further if they box him a bit more regularly.
Here is that big victory Mark Magsayo had against Gary Russell Jr some years back.
