Arnold Barboza Technical Skill Demands Strategic Matchups Moving Forward

Arnold Barboza Jr. proved his class with a wide decision over Kenneth Sims Jr. in his welterweight debut, but his lack of power means his future success depends on careful matchmaking against the right opponents.

He has the defeat to Teofimo Lopez on points last year but other than that he is undefeated in his professional boxing career thus far.

Lopez far from convincing that night also.

Some things to note on Barboza on technical boxing things for a second, also;

  • Barboza is a fundamentally sound boxer who does everything well but nothing spectacularly–he relies on technical precision over explosive power
  • He has excellent range control, fighting effectively on the mid-range and outside with quick feet and a responsible jab
  • His lack of knockout power is a clear limitation—he has just 11 KOs in 33 wins and only one finish in his last ten fights
  • Against Sims, he outlanded his opponent 211 to 133 and controlled distance with his jab throughout all 12 rounds
  • He beat Sims to the punch consistently, landing cleaner shots while Sims struggled to find answers
  • The win came in his welterweight debut after moving up from 140, and he looked physically stronger at the new weight
  • He is now targeting champions like Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, as well as a rematch with Teofimo Lopez–his only career loss
  • His team is also considering in-house Golden Boy options like Alexis Rocha or Raul Curiel, which would be more winnable fights
  • Against elite power punchers, his lack of pop means he cannot afford to engage in slugfests–he must box smart and avoid being dragged into wars
  • His future hinges on getting the right stylistic matchups where his technical jab-and-move approach can shine, not against heavy-handed pressure fighters who can exploit his limited power

Arnold Barboza Jr has a lot of ability at the moment and can absolutely be in big fights this year if they put him in there in some.

He is not the best at 147 pounds, not the smartest boxer out there, but he can fight a bit and is entertaining, certainly of use to boxing as a sport.

Get Arnold Barboza in there against someone tough next up.

He might look for the Teofimo Lopez rematch if Lopez defeats Rolly Romero on Saturday night in live boxing in Las Vegas.
