Andy Ruiz offers insight into how to defeat Ryan Garcia, there are other ways

American Ryan Garcia is one of the best and bigger names in US boxing at moment but he is not invincible.

He is a welterweight champion at the moment and coming off a solid win recently over Mario Barrios but he has been hit plenty before.

Knocked out cold even.

He has also under performed in fights against the likes of Rolly Romero and sometimes is not switched on or motivated for boxing at all.

Former heavyweight champion, Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr offered the following on how to defeat Garcia below.

How to beat him (per Ruiz):

  • Smother Ryan’s punches
  • Make the fight awkward and close
  • Prevent him from getting the space and rhythm needed to unload his big shots (especially the left hook).

Here are other technical ways to beat Ryan Garcia, building on Ruiz’s advice:

  • Neutralize the left hook — It’s his best weapon; take it away and he becomes far less effective.
  • Keep a high guard — Block his left hook with disciplined hands to nullify his power.
  • Control distance — Force him to close the gap rather than letting him operate freely at his preferred range.
  • Apply constant pressure — Close distance and don’t let him breathe; he struggles when uncomfortable.
  • Fight off-rhythm — Garcia doesn’t like awkward, unorthodox timing—it disrupts his setup.
  • Exploit his backward head pull — He leans straight back with his chin exposed after throwing the jab.
  • Attack the body — Shorter fighters can sap his wind and resolve with body work.
  • Force him to fight at close range — Despite his height, he likes to burrow forward, where shorter opponents can trouble him.
  • Target his footwork — He’s flat-footed and lacks lateral movement; make him move.

Ryan Garcia is due to face Conor Benn next up.

A boxer who no doubt might look to employ some of the above strategies and technical boxing inputs in his sweet science game plan.

Sometimes as well Garcia can be a slow starter and can get with big shots and get caught cold early.

It all depends on how his mood is in training camp often and how serious he is taking his training.

An explosive boxer when on form but he has shown some decline in recent years.

His last fight was very solid though with Barrios.
