What Jack Dempsey million dollar gate vs Georges Carpentier 105 years ago today could have been worth in 2026

It is 105 years ago today since Jack Dempsey fought in a match up that shocked the world of boxing for its time and even today in boxing.

On July 2nd 1921, this time 105 years ago today — US boxer Jack Dempsey became the first man ever in boxing to create a million dollar gate.

Against Frenchman Georges Carpentier of the time.

A truly remarkable feat when you consider how long ago that was.

Boxing used to sell out baseball stadiums all the time in America back then.

It is on its way back to where it was back then, right now, this summer and beyond.

The fight actually generated over $1.7 million dollars on the day and Dempsey knocked out Carpenter in the fourth round on the night.

The official attendance was just over 80,000 but record-keeping was not as accurate on attendances in those days.

Some think the real number could have been over 90,000 spectators there on the night in Jersey city in Jersey in the US on the night.

If you factor in inflation, how boxing has grown commercially as a sport internationally since with international rights revenues, and more, there is some things to note.

That was 105 years ago and things in America are quite expensive in today’s times in 2026.

The fight would have sold out a stadium as well with over 100,000 capacity at least in one of the biggest events ever seen in US sports history in 2026.

That $1.7 million at least — upon balanced assumptions and estimates — is worth at least $350 million today (minimum, at least that).

That is just what it is worth at the gate alone — let that sink in.

That does not even include things like pay per view, streaming rights, sponsorship and many other revenues for commercial sporting events in 2026.

A list too long to go into here.

The fight would have easily beaten boxing’s biggest financial fight of all time between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

That generated over $600 million back in 2015 but Dempsey would have went way past this for the above.

If you add up everything and revenues across everything of what that fight would have done in today’s times — it would definitely have become boxing’s first billion dollar fight for revenue generated.

Possibly quite a bit more than that across everything worldwide.

That is the truth of it.

Jack Demspey was a small man for a heavyweight in those days.

But one of the best punchers for his size and in any era pound for pound that fought in professional boxing.

A remarkable puncher and a remarkable record set today 105 years ago in professional boxing.
