Putting the Jaron Ennis knockout of Xander Zayas in perspective

The Jaron Ennis knockout of Xander Zayas was an impressive won but for those new to boxing you must understand the context of it all.

After the fight Ennis said he was far from his best and so on at the weekend.

Going into the fight he claimed he was the pound for pound number one in boxing.

He might have been saying he was unhappy with his performance after because he was uncontent with being caught and hurt by a much weaker puncher in Xander Zayas.

Zayas while a world champion and whom was unbeaten before fighting Ennis was not one of the great world champions of these times.

Maybe one of the weaker ones who had an above average heart but a weak puncher at the highest level of world championship boxing.

Many believe Jaron Ennis ducked the Terence Crawford fight and the Victor Ortiz fights in recent years as well.

Crawford since retired.

If you look at Jaron Ennis’ record there are no real elite names on the resume yet out of 36 fights so far.

That is shocking for a boxer to be 36-0 with no elite names and elite world champions or pound for pound top 10 or even top 15 names on it.

His promoter or anyone else cannot paper over this.

He hasn’t fought anyone at all really and has padded his record in Philly for the most part.

That bubble will burst if he does not go outside of it against proper competition.

Zayas is the first actual name on his resume but he is not one of the greatest fighters in boxing history to ever hold a world championship belt.

To say the least.

Hence, another reason, where belts and titles mean less and less in boxing everyday now.

And why more and more of the world’s leading boxers continue to vacate and throw belts in the trash can every week now.

Jessie Rodriguez and Usyk doing so only last week.

To pursue the big fights they want.

A time where one lineal champion (person considered the world champion in each weight class) in each division, the man who beat the man, is more important now.

And pound for pound rankings in boxing are debated by spectators the world over more than ever and considered more important as well now.

Zayas is a solid fighter but he caught Boots Ennis a lot on Saturday.

Had that been Terence Crawford or a pound for pound rated boxer in there with Ennis he would have been knocked out.

Some think Jaron Ennis has a suspect chin but this has not been fully tested yet as he has not fought the best boxers in the world.

To prove himself and the talk that he is the best boxer in the world — Jaron Ennis would need to do two things (at least).

Get in there and outbox and beat world champion Sebastian Fundora and Vergil Ortiz impressively.

Then possibly the likes of Tim Tszyu as well (who fights Errol Spence soon).

They would be three genuine world champions and names to put onto the resume of Jaron Boots Ennis at that point.

And to prove the talk and hype and so on.

He lived up to the hype a tiny bit but is not the world beater and pound for pound number one boxer he says he is.
