Teofimo Lopez was on hand at the weekend to watch the big Jaron Ennis vs Xander Zayas fight in NY and he had an interesting take.
Jaron Ennis got the knockout of previously undefeated 154 pounds champion Xander Zayas in round 7.
He knocked him down many times in the fight and dominated it in many ways.
Other than for getting caught a bit himself early on, his boxing ability and speed was far more than Zayas — so was his gas tank.
Teofimo Lopez thought the fight came down to who wanted it more though afterwards.
He praised the heart of Zayas and his determination but said Ennis wanted it more.
We disagree.
Sure, that may have played a part but the reason why he won had nothing to do with that.
He had far better boxing ability, way more speed, was way sharper and had far more cardio than a weight drained Zayas did.
The move to 154 pounds suited Ennis and Zayas had been there in the division far too long.
That, and Ennis was a far better boxer. He controlled the distance of the fight and dictated the pace of the bout mostly.
That is what the fight came down to.
Lopez mentioned he would be open to the fight himself with Ennis but is focused on 147 pounds for now.
Teofimo Lopez is set to take on Rolly Romero on August 22nd next up.
Alas, Jaron Ennis did well in boxing at the weekend but has a way to go to prove he is the best boxer in the world like he claims.
