Lomachenko wants to fight Charly Suarez in comeback, how do they match up

Vasiliy Lomachenko apparently is coming back to boxing in 2026 and Charly Suarez is who he wants to fight but who is he?

Lomachenko is a former multi-weight world champion and former pound for pound rated as one of the best boxers on Earth when he was competing.

He went out on a high from boxing some years ago after beating the younger world champion George Kambosos Jr from Australia.

But apparently he wants to comeback now due to being free from Bob Arum and able to fight big fights, but he could have just done that anyway if he wanted.

On Charly Suarez, for those new to boxing, here’s some more on this:

  • Charly Suarez is a 37-year-old undefeated Filipino boxer.
  • He fights at super featherweight with a record of 18-0 and 10 KOs.
  • Suarez competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics for the Philippines.
  • He won multiple SEA Games gold medals as an amateur.
  • In 2024 he captured an International title.
  • In 2025 he fought Emanuel Navarrete in a world title bout that ended in a No Contest.
  • Suarez stands 5’6″ with a 74″ reach as an orthodox fighter.
  • He is known for sharp technical boxing and strong counter-punching.
  • He is ranked in the top 10 at 130 pounds by major outlets.

Lomachenko has been away for a while now.

Some things to consider here as well on this comeback, possibly:

  • Lomachenko turns 38 this year and has been out since May 2024.
  • A 2026 return means over two years without a real fight.
  • Ring rust slows reflexes and hurts timing.
  • It makes it harder to find distance and throw clean punches early.
  • At his age, long layoffs hurt recovery and explosiveness more.
  • Fighters often look slower and tire faster after long breaks.
  • Mental hesitation can appear after long time away from the ring.
  • Suarez is young, active, and has recent big-fight experience.
  • Jumping straight into a tough opponent raises the risk.
  • Age plus rust could limit Loma’s sharpness and output.

Here’s how the two could possibly match up as well:

  • Lomachenko is a southpaw. Suarez fights orthodox.
  • Loma has elite footwork and ring angles.
  • Suarez holds a reach advantage with good height.
  • Suarez is a sharp technical counter-puncher.
  • Loma’s hand speed and ring IQ are much higher.
  • Suarez likes to pressure and throw hard punches.
  • Suarez is younger at 37. Loma turns 38 this year.
  • Loma has faced far better competition overall.
  • Loma’s movement can frustrate Suarez’s pressure.
  • Ring rust could make early rounds competitive for Suarez

There is no definitive time line on when he is back or if in fact he will come back at all.

The big fight would be a Lomachenko vs Gervonta Davis bout of course.

That’s the fight.
