Obviously the two opponents calibers are completely different.
Golovkin was near his prime back in the day and middleweight world champion, one of the impressive ones in the 21st century at least.
Mbilli is a super-middleweight champion and doesn’t have a resume, amateur or pro, of someone like a Gennady GGG Golovkin, obviously.
Here’s a look at some of the stats between the two for Canelo:
- Experience: Golovkin was a long-reigning champ when he fought Canelo. Mbilli is unbeaten but still chasing his first full world title.
- Age: GGG was past his physical prime in the trilogy. Mbilli is in his athletic prime now.
- Style: GGG relied on a heavy jab and pressure. Mbilli fights as a high-volume power puncher.
- Power: Golovkin was known for one-punch KO power. Mbilli has a high stoppage rate too.
- Body punching: Canelo hurt GGG repeatedly to the body. Mbilli hasn’t faced that level of body attack yet.
- Defense: Canelo’s defense and counters gave GGG problems. Mbilli is more offense-first.
- Durability: Golovkin’s chin held up for 36 rounds with Canelo. Mbilli hasn’t been tested at that level.
- Fight results: Canelo never lost to GGG in three fights. Mbilli just drew his last bout.
- Ring IQ: GGG had massive amateur and pro experience. Mbilli is still proving himself against elite names.
- Key difference: Canelo says Mbilli isn’t Golovkin because GGG had the chin, jab, and resume to push Canelo. Mbilli doesn’t have that proof yet.
Canelo basically said a short time ago at the launch conference that even if he was 50 years old, that Mbilli wasn’t Golovkin and he would still beat him if Canelo were even 50.
The two will fight this coming September 12th in Saudi Arabia.
