Amari Jones lives up to the hype in some form in his biggest acid test as a boxer in San Jose — and how.
Going into the fight there was a bit of hype on Amari Jones and sometimes this in boxing and things in America is misplaced.
Not the case here. He brutally knocked out a former world champion from Germany in just three rounds tonight in San Jose.
Here’s what happened:
- Method of Victory: 3rd-round KO
- Time of Stoppage: 31 seconds remaining in Round 3
- Jones dropped Gualtieri twice in the third round before the referee stopped the fight
- Record update: Jones improves to 17-0 (15 KOs)
- Gualtieri falls to 25-2-1
- Bout was an IBF middleweight title eliminator at SAP Center in San Jose
On Amari Jones for those new to boxing:
- Jones is from Oakland and said fighting at home brings different pressure
- He went into the fight undefeated with a high knockout rate
- Gualtieri was coming in looking to become world champion again
This was a very live test for Jones and he passed it with flying colors to his credit.
He showed good tenacity, great power, great finishing instinct when he had his opponent hurt, a solid jab and more than anything, solid range and distance control to keep the fight where he needed it and used his range well in that regard.
A big night for him and a big win for a new US boxing prospect.
Who knows what fights Amari Jones is in next but tonight was his night.
