Errol Spence admits doubts over comeback soon in 2026 against tough Australian Tim Tszyu where he is going straight back in the deep end.
Unlike some Spence is not taking an easy touch for his comeback.
Going in with a live shark in a 158 pounds catchweight. Commendable but misguided in judgement.
Ahead of the fight he has through body language and other bits conceded he has concerns about it. Not good. Some things to take stock of here:
- Spence fights Tim Tszyu on July 25, 2025 in Australia. First bout in 3 years.
- He lost to Terence Crawford in July 2023, giving up WBC, WBA, IBF welterweight titles.
- The Tszyu fight is at 158 lbs catchweight. He’s moving up from 147.
- Spence hinted at retirement: “I already got my right foot hanging out the door… You never know.”
- He called the 3-year layoff “scary” after being in the gym 24/7.
- The time off gave him clarity: “I’m okay with or without boxing, I’ll be okay.”
- Spence is now 36 years old.
- He’s training with Ronnie Shields instead of Derrick James.
- Tszyu has lost to Fundora and Murtazaliev but remains dangerous.
- Crawford is supporting him: “Good seeing you back out there. Get to it, I’ll be there supporting.”
The change of trainer as well is a big move and Ronnie Shields while has been around for a while, has not always worked out for many fighters.
It could work out but Spence didn’t come across as brimming with conference for the comeback at the recent presser announcing the Tim Tszyu fight.
We think Errol Spence is really biting off more than he can chew here but he deserves a small bit credit for stepping in at this level after so long off.
