Benavidez future at cruiserweight OR light heavyweight

David Benavidez future at cruiserweight or light heavyweight? That is an intriguing one so let’s take a look at options.

David Benavidez knocked out Gilberto Ramirez inside of six rounds at the weekend.

The best win of his career.

Some facts first.

  • Holds WBC light heavyweight title still.
  • Intends to drop back down to 175 for next fight.
  • Called out Bivol, unified 175 champ.
  • “I’m champion at 175 and 200”.
  • Offered Canelo fight at 175.
  • Bivol fights Eifert May 30 first.
  • Fans want Opetaia at cruiserweight.
  • Benavidez: “first time coming up to 200”.
  • Said couldn’t overpower Zurdo, used speed.
  • Likely vacates 200 if Bivol fight made.

On the balance of it, you’ve have to think the Dmitry Bivol fight is marginally the bigger one.

Also it would make more sense to prove he is the best at light-heavyweight first before doing so in a unification at cruiserweight with Jai Opetaia.

We think he will try to go after the Bivol fight next.

Whatever happens with David Benavidez this year he did well on Cinco De Mayo 2026 and benefitted boxing as a sport, as did the whole card.
