Benavidez makes history Cinco de Mayo

David Benavidez makes history Cinco de Mayo 2026 this year and when it is all said and done, he did so in style.

We’re not sure about that nickname ‘The Monster’ — same for Naoya Inoue — neither are monsters and are far from it.

But from a sporting perspective as far as professional boxing goes, they have great engines, great work rates and both punch relatively power for their respective divisions.

But it was the accumulation of the punches and speed of them that did the damage for Benavidez in his round six victory over Gilberto Ramirez. Some facs.

  • Headlined Cinco de Mayo weekend in Vegas properly for the first time with Canelo boxing.
  • Traditionally Canelo’s night over recent years. Not so now Benavidez has a claim to it now.
  • Became first to win titles at 168, 175, 200.
  • Won WBA & WBO cruiserweight titles.
  • Fight date: May 2, 2026.
  • “Made history as he became a three-weight world champion” — one onlooker noted.
  • “New Mexican star crowned” — another fan said.
  • Walked out with Mike Tyson and Ryan Garcia.
  • PBC card topped by Mexican Monster.
  • “Showed he belonged at very top level” — another fan mentioned in the pound for pound debates.

The biggest thing as well was that he showed other than an outstanding win in the ring was that he gave not only Mexican and American boxing fans a great fight, but worldwide boxing fans too on Cinco De Mayo.

It was great for him and the entire event to live up to the hype on what was and still is one of the biggest weekend’s in boxing of the year.

Canelo Alvarez used to do this before but he didn’t even box this year on the weekend.

It is almost Benavidez’ weekend now after the big win at the weekend.
